Are you looking for great sunscreen for dark skin, but without the icky white cast? We’ve got you covered (and protected )

Sunscreen is a must in any skincare routine. Because dark skin is rich in melanin, a common misconception is that Black and Brown people don’t need sunscreen. While deeper skin tones may have a slightly higher tolerance for sun exposure, this natural tolerance is not without limits. Unprotected skin can result in hyperpigmentation, sunburn, and in the worst case scenario, melanoma. Because dark skin is not immune to the sun’s harmful effects, I’ve got a great list of tried and true sunscreens that are clear on dark skin. Protecting your skin shouldn’t have to be an embarrassing experience, and these sunscreens offer all the benefits of SPF with none of the white cast:

Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen

Rihanna does it again with her Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor moisturizer. It’s great for lasting hydration, invisible sun protection and brightens the skin while reducing the appearance of pores. This sunscreen does not contain oxybenzone or octinoxate. This lightweight, oil-free 2-in-1 moisturizer and sunscreen is almost transparent on dark skin. It helps against dehydration, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots. It’s also makeup-friendly, with no pilling.

Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen

Unseen Sunscreen is one of the most popular sunscreens for dark skin, because it really lives up to the invisibility claims. It feels like a luxurious, smoothing primer for the skin, and it provides excellent sun protection. Unseen Sunscreen‘s reputation is well-deserved, thanks to its transparent nature. It’s a fantastic choice to consider if you’re searching for a face sunscreen that feels lightweight, non-greasy, holds makeup and seems relatively invisible on dark skin.

Supergoop Glow Oil

Supergoop Glow Oil SPF 50 is a healthy alternative to standard, creamy sunscreens that contain harmful chemicals. This nontoxic sunscreen is a moisturizing, reef-safe lightweight oil that gives up to 2 hours of sun protection. It’s made with skin-nourishing ingredients to give your skin a healthy shine while protecting it from sun damage. I love their mini version, as it’s perfect for travel! You can also easily throw it in your purse for those on-the-go moments.

Black Girl Sunscreen

A list of sunscreens for melanin-rich skin wouldn’t be complete without Black Girl Sunscreen. The first of its kind, this Black owned sunscreen caters to Black women. It has a unique formula with really good ingredients like hydrating vitamin E and C, skin tone-balancing cacao, and soothing sunflower oil. It absorbs rapidly and is moisturizing enough to be used as a full body lotion. You may sweat without worrying about your sunscreen creating a white cast on your face and body. They also have a matte sunscreen for oily skin types.

Farmacy Green Defense Daily Mineral Sunscreen

This mineral sunscreen from Farmacy Beauty is an almost-invisible broad-spectrum SPF 30 that is never oily and blends well under makeup. I will be honest and say that due to its concentration of Zinc there is a slight purple cast, but if you’re using it on your face it will sink in after some massaging. You can also speed up the process by mixing it with a face oil like their Honey Grail to ensure it dries down clear. I usually use this one on makeup days.

Sun Bum Sunscreen Spray SPF 50

This spray from Sun Bum is one of the best spray sunscreens on the market. It has an SPF of 50, absorbs quickly, and is quite hydrating. It contains Vitamin E, is vegan, gluten-free, and convenient when you’re in a rush. Sun Bum Sunscreen Spray SPF 50 is a reef-friendly, easy-to-apply sunscreen spray with a dry touch, it will be your best travel companion.

Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50 Moisturizer

The Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50 Moisturizer is light and glow-enhancing, so it may be used as a moisturizer as well as a daily sunscreen. It absorbs immediately, so there is no white cast, and hydrates without feeling sticky. This daily sunscreen also protects against environmental factors that contribute to skin aging. It will provide excellent protection and moisture to all skin tones!

Sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation spots to appear, especially on the face, neck, and chest. To prevent the appearance of hyperpigmentation spots, you should use reinforced sun protection (30-50+) with an application at regular intervals, and to help you choose the right sunscreen.
